Professional Support

ELA currently retains the services of several independent contractors and vendors for the professional support of its programs and operations:

Interim Executive Director

A long-time ELA member and an independent consultant to charter school authorizers, school districts, and other education clients, Tom Hutton became ELA's Interim Executive Director in August of 2019, tasked with helping ELA reposition itself for a bright future. Tom is a former school attorney who served in-house with the National School Boards Association and its Council of School Attorneys and later in private practice in Seattle. He had been a co-founder as a law student of Thurgood Marshall Academy Public Charter School, a law-themed high school in the District of Columbia, and more recently served as the first executive director of the Hawaii State Public Charter School Commission and on the governing board of Wai'alae Elementary Public Charter School in Honolulu. Tom also serves as the executive director of the California Charter Authorizing Professionals (CCAP), an association of school districts and county offices of education that authorize charter schools. During his career he has been a frequent speaker, writer, and news media source, as well as a sometime adjunct professor of education law, most recently at Indiana University Bloomington. Tom was educated in public schools in New Hampshire, Wisconsin, and Colorado, went to Connecticut College, holds a graduate certificate in public administration from the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, and earned his J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center. 

Project Support

Kimberly Waite CooperKimberly Waite-Cooper, Project Support Provider, Yuba City, California

Kimberly Waite-Cooper provides support to a variety of ELA operations and especially to Tom Hutton, with whom she also works for the California Charter Authorizing Professionals (CCAP). Kimberly comes to ELA after a career with the armed forces, starting in the Ohio Army National Guard and then for 21 years in the U.S. Air Force, where she retired as a First Sergeant having served as an Automatic Flight Control Systems Specialist and an Aerospace Physiology Journeyman. Kimberly also worked as a Logistics Flight Chief with the U-2 spy plane program for eight years before resigning to care for her mother. Born in Key West, Florida, she was raised in Cleveland, Ohio, where she was thrilled to be among the first graduating class of the Cleveland School of Science. A resident of Yuba City, California for over 18 years, Kimberly holds a Masters of Arts in Education from William Jessup University and currently is a doctoral student in education at Regent University.

 

 

Conference Support

Nora KlineNora Kline, Indiana University Conferences, Bloomington, Indiana

Nora Kline is Senior Conference Manager, Client Development at Indiana University Conferences and brings over 14 years' experience as an event planner, providing a range of support services for conferences worldwide with an focus on education. Her supports for ELA's Annual Conference include site and venue selection, representation with hotels and vendors, program planning, budgeting, marketing, and registration. Nora earned her undergraduate degree in Event Management from Indiana University.

 

 

Publications Support 


Pam HardyPam Hardy, Publications Consultant, Westlake, Ohio

Pam Hardy had a marketing and copy editing career in the publishing industry before joining ELA as its Publications Specialist, where for six years she supported ELA's publications and periodicals before becoming an independent contractor in October, 2019. She continues to provide these supports and others to ELA on a part-time basis during ELA's reorganization. Pam earned her undergraduate degree from The Ohio State University.
 

 

 

 

Administrative Support

Pat PetruskyPat Petrusky, Data and Bookkeeping Assistant, North Royalton, Ohio

Pat Petrusky served for seven years as ELA's Member Services Administrator before becoming an independent contractor and then obtaining full-time employment elsewhere. However, she continues to provide much-needed help to ELA and its members on the side as available and needed. Pat earned her undergraduate degree from Indiana Wesleyan University.
